Caption Reads: A Kwakiutl Echo Mask with interchangeable mouths (beneath the mask) was used to represent several different figures, depending on which mouth was used. The basic mask depicts the spirit Echo, said to have the ability to imitate the sounds made by any creature. During the course of the ceremonial telling of Echo's tale, the wearer would hide his masked face beneath the folds of his cloak like blanket and secretly replace Echo's mouth with the mouth of the creature the spirit was imitating at the time. Each one of the mouths is equipped with a wooden stem at its back, and the wearer clamped his jaw down on it to hold the mouth in place.
