Caption Reads: A variety of Hopi musical instruments includes a pebble filled gourd rattle (lower left) and a three-piece device consisting of a lamb's scapula, a notched stick, and a hollowgourd. To produce a resonant, rasping sound, the scapula is rubbed on the stick held against the gourd. The wooden bull-roarer (upper right) produces a moan when twirled in the air by its string. Such instruments are used to accompany chants and dances. | |
