Caption Reads: Clothing of Plains Indians, in the days before white traders arrived with bags full of beads, was resplendent with multicolored quillwork, as seen in the warshirt above and the Sioux moccesins at left. The dyed quills were sewn on or woven into the clothing by women, who took great pride in their quilling skills. Because porcupines were not often found on the Plains, the tribes of the region had to obtain the quills through barter with the Indians who lived in the woods to the north. | |
